Thank you for entrusting Mid-America Heart & Lung Surgeons with your cardiac, thoracic or vascular care. Diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, and vascular disease is our specialty. We are here to help you recover and resume your life as quickly as possible.
General thoracic surgery is a field that specializes in diseases of the lungs and esophagus. The most common diseases requiring thoracic surgery include lung cancer, chest trauma, esophageal cancer, emphysema, and lung transplantation.
Any surgical procedure involving the heart, performed to correct acquired or congenital defects, replace diseased valves, open or bypass blocked vessels, or graft a prosthesis or a transplant is considered cardiac surgery.
The vascular system is the network of blood vessels that circulate blood to and from the heart and lungs. Corrective procedures include angioplasty and/or stenting, stent/graft placement, thrombolysis, and other adjuncts for vascular reconstruction.
When progressive heart failure can't be helped by medications and lifestyle changes, heart transplant may be the only effective treatment option. Heart device options include valve replacement, defibrillator implementation and left ventricular assist devices.
